The Tonbridge School assessment

The Tonbridge School assessment covers four computer based subjects over 80 minutes, and one written subject over 30 minutes, totalling to 1 hour 50 minutes.

These assessments are designed in partnership with Quest, for candidates sitting Provisional Exams for 13+ entry in Year 7, Late Entry exams in Year 8, and 14+ entrance exams for Tonbridge School. The subjects are as follows:

  • English - Comprehension (30)
  • English - Free form writing (30)
  • Verbal Reasoning (10)
  • Mathematics (30)
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning (10)

The assessment timings and structure are the same for each entry point, but it is not the same exam, as each one is designed to be age appropriate.

The computer-based sections are largely multiple choice and do not require typing or keyboard skills. These assessments adapt in difficulty based on your child's answers, except in English, where the difficulty is fixed.

The 30-minute free-form writing task builds on the subject matter introduced in the first part of the English assessment, giving candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their discursive writing skills.

Rather than testing comprehension alone, it invites them to develop and extend the ideas from the passage in a thoughtful and well-structured response. For example, if the reading passage explores the different diseases that affect trees, the accompanying essay question might ask candidates to consider the wider implications of tree disease and propose ways to reduce its spread and minimise its impact.
